Apple will acquire music and image recognition app Shazam.Cupertino this week confirmed the news to TechCrunch via the following (unusually verbose) statement:“We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple. Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS. Today, it’s used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms.“Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement.”Financial terms of the deal, reportedly in the works for about five months, were not disclosed; unnamed TechCrunch sources place it in the ballpark of $400 million.Founded in 1999, Shazam initially launched in 2002 in the UK, where the program was known as “2580”—the shortcode customers dialed to have music recognized. The phone automatically hung up after 30 seconds, then texted a song title and artist name to the user.Following its debut as a free smartphone app in 2008, the music-matching service took off; by the autumn of 2014, Shazam exceeded 20 billion tags and 100 million monthly active mobile users.Over the years, the company added new features, like integration with Apple’s Siri, as well as Spotify and Snapchat—both reportedly in talks to acquire the company before Cupertino swooped in.“We are excited to announce that Shazam has entered into an agreement to become part of Apple,” a spokesman told Geek in an emailed statement. “Shazam is one of the highest-rated apps in the world and loved by hundreds of millions of users and we can’t imagine a better home for Shazam to enable us to continue innovating and delivering magic for our users.”Apple did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.center_img iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro Have More Cameras, More ProblemsApple Arcade Launches Next Week last_img read more
