COUNCIL PLANNING TO BUILD 610 HOUSES BY 2020

first_imgDonegal County Council is planning to construct as many as 610 new houses between now and the end of 2020.That is in contrast to claims they constructed only three houses in the past three years.The new surge in social housing construction is due to the Govt’s Social Housing Strategy launched late last year at an estimated cost of €3.8 billion over six years. The waiting list for housing at Donegal County Council is in the region of 3,000 according to councillors.The new plan will see 45 start-ups in Donegal this year along with a number of finished units across the six electoral areas.Letterkenny with the county’s biggest housing demand will get 220 new starts with Inishowen being granted 150 new houses. There will be 100 new starts in the Finn Valley with 70 each in Donegal and Glenties.The Government has committed to spending €3.8 billion nationally to build and refurbish 35,000 social housing units over the next six years. The funding will come from central exchequer funds, off-balance-sheet funds and some public-private partnership programmes.
