Mineral stability in peralkaline silicic rocks: information from trachytes of the Menengai volcano, Kenya

first_imgElectron microprobe analyses are presented for phenocrysts and matrix glass in peralkaline, silica-oversaturated trachytes from the Menengai volcano, Kenya Rift Valley. The dominant phenocryst assemblage is alkali feldspar–hedenbergite–fayalite–titanomagnetite–apatite. Aenigmatite, amphibole and quartz occur rarely in more peralkaline rocks. QUILF calculations indicate that the trachytic magmas crystallised at temperatures of 854–870 °C, at relatively low oxidation states (ΔFMQ − 1.6 to − 1.7) and silica activity (aSiO2 (Qtz) of 0.60–0.66). The new analyses are used, along with published data, to outline the distribution of the main phases in the compositional spectrum of peralkaline quartz trachytes and rhyolites. There is uncertainty about the nature, or even existence, of a low-temperature zone in the alkali feldspar primary phase region, the equivalent of the thermal valley in the haplogranite system. Quartz phenocrysts may appear early or late in the crystallisation sequence, even in rocks of similar bulk composition, its appearance perhaps being a function of the F content of the melts. Whereas hedenbergite and fayalite show fairly systematic compositional trends with increasing host rock peralkalinity, amphibole compositions are variable, for reasons not yet understood. Aenigmatite crystallisation is at least partly controlled by oxygen fugacity and silica activity. With rare exceptions, ilmenite and titanomagnetite are incompatible phases but the factors controlling their relative stabilities are not clear. It appears that peralkaline trachyte–rhyolite sequences evolve along many crystallisation paths, the paths perhaps being strongly influenced by pH2O, pF2, melt F/Cl ratios and perhaps total pressure.last_img read more

AUDIO: Ilechukwu Predicts Tough Season for MFM, Targets Top 10 Finish in NPFL

first_imgTechnical Adviser of Mountain and Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC, Fidelis Ilechukwu has predicted tough times for the ‘Olukoya Boys’ ahead of the upcoming season, stating that the team will be targeting a Top 10 finish in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).MFM, along with champions Plateau United, will fly Nigeria’s flag in next year’s CAF Champions League after finishing in second place in last season’s NPFL, missing out of the league title on the final Match Day, in only their second season in the top flight. However, Ilechukwu told www.busybuddiesng.com that teams in the NPFL are now aware of the capabilities of his side, and as such, will no longer take them for granted, adding that the departure of striker Stephen Odey and midfielder Oladele Oshobe will make things difficult for his side.“I know this season (2017/18) is going to be a tough season for MFM FC and we are working to make sure that at the end of it, we will able to make Top 10 in the Nigeria Professional Football League,” he said.“That’s because last season, people saw MFM as a Church team without knowing that MFM have all it takes to win the league, but this season, any team that wants to play MFM will be fully prepared.“At the same time, losing Stephen Odey and Oladele Oshobe in midfield, in as much as we have an opportunity to replace them, I know, I believe and I’m feeling it, it’s going to be a tough season for MFM FC,” Ilechukwu stated. The ‘Olukoya Boys’ are expected to participate in the 2017/18 NPFL season which begins on 14 January; the 2018 CAF Champions League as well as the Aiteo Cup.
