THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH MOVES TO ANOTHER STAGE IN STRENGTHENING ITS HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

In 2001 an assessment of Dominica’s health information system was done and it was recognized that the system needed to be strengthened.Since then a significant amount of work has been done to reduce the paper based system and replace it with the use of modern electronic systems. In 2006 a patient administration system was launched at the princess Margaret hospital.National epidemiologist Dr. Paul Rickets, while addressing a two-day Health Information System Assessment Workshop on Wednesday, February 23rd, in Roseau said that a significant amount of progress has been made in improving the health information system at the islands main hospital.“The progress that we are making is coming in several forms and through several sub systems including strengthening of HIV information systems and looking at the environmental health information systems. “We have developed a strong surveillance response system here and I want to recognise the impending deadline of June 2012 for the implementation of the International Health Regulations” DR. Ricketts said.  He went further to say that one of the components of which is to have strong surveillance and response systems which essentially means having strong connected information systems.The national epidemiologist says the ministry of health will seek to strengthen relations with the national registry, the central statistics office, the ministry of agriculture, the police and other agencies within the private sector.“We recognise here, of course, that the determinants of health do not all reside within health. If we have to really have a health nation, we need to recognise that we have to interrelate receiving information from, but also sending information to all agencies and partners that impact on health.”The ministry of health is collaborating with the pan American health organisation (PAHO) and the ministries of health within the region through the O.E.C.
