Sonia and Rahul watch ‘aam aadmi’ sports to bond with the masses

first_imgIn 2007, Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak de India came as a shot in the arm for hockey in the country. Three years later, the presence of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in the common man’s stand at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium – where the Indian hockey team vanquished Pakistan on Sunday – has given a similar leg up to the sport.Cricket, particularly its IPL version, may be a mega event with big advertisers, sponsors and VVIP politicians as well as celebrities hopping on to the bandwagon. But aam aadmi games such as hockey, wrestling and boxing appear to be acquiring a new profile after the Congress chief and her son, an AICC general secretary, ” connected” with the crowds at the Commonwealth Games venues. The two were at the Indira Gandhi Stadium earlier on Sunday itself, when India’s Sushil Kumar won a wrestling gold. That they were not angling for just a photo- op was evident from their spontaneous celebratory cheering each time the grappler put his opponent on the mat. ” There was something genuine about them,” a senior Congress leader said.An ecstatic Sonia in a green salwar- kameez and Rahul donning an orange kurta enthusiastically applauded every goal scored by the Indian hockey team in the Sunday encounter. She even stood up every few minutes to cheer the team.Significantly, the mother- son duo sat in the enclosure meant for the general public even though a VVIP seat was reserved for Sonia. Rahul purchased a ‘100 ticket to watch the game,’ a source said.advertisementSome in the Congress pointed out that no senior BJP leader thought it fit to grace the CWG events, even as a few of them are regulars at cricket stadiums.Congress sources present at the stadiums said Sonia and Rahul sat and watched the events like any commoner. For a country long used to VVIP obtrusiveness, their gesture came as a pleasant surprise to many spectators.Rajya Sabha MP and AICC secretary Rajeev Shukla felt the presence of the two Congress leaders had send out a ” good signal”. He said: ” Their presence has given an impetus to the Games. This has translated into huge crowds at the stadiums over the past few days.”last_img read more
