Clippers rookie Terance Mann takes confidence cues from veterans

first_imgNo amount of sage advice could’ve prepared Terance Mann for his rookie season in the NBA; there simply wasn’t a blueprint for a season interrupted for four-plus months by a pandemic before being reset in a sealed-off Florida bubble. But though everyone involved is a rookie in regard to the situation and surroundings at Walt Disney World Resort, the game is the game, and the Clippers’ institutional wisdom for what works when you’re coming off the bench stands.“We follow the leadership of Lou Williams and Trezz (Montrezl Harrell),” said Mann, via Zoom, before practice this week. “Those guys kind of taught us almost how to play when you come off the bench, what type of energy you need to bring, what type of focus you need to have. We feed off that.“It’s like kind of split right down the middle: some of us are younger, some are older. We kind of bring that energy they need. They keep us focused.” Clippers’ Paul George: ‘If I make shots, this series could be a little different’ “I feel like we’re focused day-to-day,” Mann said. “I really wouldn’t call us a flip-the-switch team. A lot of these guys have a lot of playoff experience. I’m sure when that time comes around, the mindset, things will be a lot different, a lot sharper.“That’s something we talk about a lot,” Mann added. “We know what we’re capable of. We just take it day-by-day. We try and sharpen our tools before it really gets into that thickness of the playoffs.”DOC IS A FAN OF HARRISClippers Coach Doc Rivers said he was excited about the news that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden named California Sen. Kamala Harris to be his running mate. She’s the first Black woman and the first Asian American woman to share a major-party presidential ticket.“It’s just beautiful,” Rivers said. “We’ve had our first Black president in President Obama and now we have a chance to have not only a Black vice president, but a woman as well. I mean, those are two things that we can cross.“It’s just a beautiful story. Now we need to keep the pressure on and we’ve just got to get everybody out to vote.”Rivers indicated he has a personal reason to root for Harris to join Biden on the ticket: “Kamala came to talk here to us, our team, two years ago. She came in to talk to our team and we’ve been friends and it’s been great to watch.” Related Articles Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error The 23-year-old guard starred at Florida State, about 300 miles away from the Lake Buena Vista bubble — even if it might seem farther from the strange new world that is 2020 NBA basketball. Still, since the restart, Mann has had moments where he’s looked at home, showing flashes of promising productivity.Without Harrell at all and with Williams in smaller-than-usual doses, the Clippers’ reserves were averaging 38.7 points in the bubble entering Wednesday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. That’s down from the 50.4 points per game they averaged before the hiatus, when both Sixth Man of the Year candidates were contributing their 18.6 and 18.7 points per game, respectively. For his part, Mann appeared in four of the Clippers’ first six games in the bubble, contests in which he was averaging 11.8 points and shooting 53.8% from the field. In Sunday’s 129-120 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, Mann did what he could to help cut a sizable deficit, going 6 for 7 from the floor and 2 for 3 from deep for 14 points in 23 minutes. In his mind, that seeding loss — in which the Clippers, playing without Paul George, Patrick Beverley and Harrell, trailed by as many as 21 points — isn’t anything to sweat too much. No, because the veterans around him have him feeling secure about the approaching playoffs, when the intensity and stakes will increase.center_img Clippers hope they can play to their capabilities, quell Mavericks’ momentum For Lakers’ LeBron James, Jacob Blake’s shooting is bigger issue than a big Game 4 victory What the Clippers are saying the day after Luka Doncic’s game-winner tied series, 2-2 Game 4 photos: Luka Doncic, Mavs shock Clippers in overtime last_img read more
