About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Liverpool forward Firmino on target for Brazil in Senegal drawby Freddie Taylor15 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveRoberto Firmino was on target for Brazil in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Senegal in Singapore. The Liverpool striker opened the scoring after just eight minutes when he latched onto a pass from Manchester City rival Gabriel Jesus before chipping the ball past Alfred Gomis from close range.Senegal levelled with a penalty by Bristol City’s Famara Diedhiou on the stroke of half-time.Neymar made his 100th appearance for Selecao, becoming just the seventh man to do so.Firmino’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane also featured and nearly scored the winner for his country with five minutes remaining.
A day after Aaron Ramsey moved closer to the exit door at the Emirates, sparking a spirited debate over Arsenal’s transfer market strategy, the club’s Hale End academy products scored the goals that saw the Gunners through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.A brace from Joe Willock and Alex Iwobi’s late strike saw the north Londoners beat Blackpool 3-0 at Bloomfield Road, with Unai Emery’s side fielding a mixture of fringe and first team players to ensure victory against the troubled League One side.Emery said before the game that his priority in all competitions is to win before adding that he will give opportunities to youngsters where possible. Consequently, the likes of Willock, Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Sako were all included in the squad to face Blackpool and it was Willock who grabbed his opportunity by the scruff of the neck, scoring two neat goals during an impressive performance in the middle of the park.“We usually work with young players and give them the opportunity to work with us,” Emery stated beforehand.“I then give them chances to play but only if we can get the victory. My responsibility is to work with them and here I want to do that.”But each player is going to earn in his way more or less chances with his performances and his everyday work.”Willock certainly took his chances at Blackpool, becoming the first Arsenal teenager to score in the FA Cup since Ramsey in 2010.The symbolism wasn’t lost on anyone, given the Welshman, who came on late in the game, is set to leave the Gunners when his contract expires this summer.Italian giants Juventus are expected to sign Ramsey on a free transfer, with Arsenal having withdrawn their contract offer for both sporting and financial reasons.Certainly, those sporting reasons were visible when Willock struck twice in the first half to effectively decide this cup clash in the visitors’ favour.Indeed, the faith in youngsters and burgeoning talent now on the cusp of Arsenal’s first team is exactly why the club can afford to let a fan favourite like Ramsey go.The Wales international was looking for £200,000 a week, a wage that the Gunners were simply unwilling to bestow upon an injury-prone midfielder, not when the club has such exciting youngsters operating in the same department.Willock is 19, the same age as fellow central midfielder Matteo Guendouzi. While the two have taken different paths to the first team – Guendouzi has been a regular starter in the Premier League almost since he arrived from France during the summer, with Willock restricted to cup clashes and Europa League games – there can be no doubting that these are two exciting talents. And with Arsenal now into the fourth round of the FA Cup, they should, along with their fellow young Gunners, be afforded more opportunities to shine as Emery goes in search of his first piece of silverware as head coach. The game against Blackpool certainly won’t be the toughest test his squad will face this season, but it provided a chance for the likes of Willock to show why Arsenal are now looking to the future rather than dwelling on the past.
Dele Alli can play as a false nine and fill the void created by Harry Kane’s injury according to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who suggested the England midfielder could play up front against Fulham on Sunday. With Kane sidelined until March with an ankle injury and Son Heung-min on international duty for South Korea at the Asian Cup, Spurs have been left short of forwards at a crucial stage in the season.Pochettino said Fernando Llorente, who has made just six Premier League appearances this season, was in his thoughts ahead of the trip to Craven Cottage, as well as youth team players Kazaiah Sterling and Troy Parrott. But he said he could take inspiration from Barcelona and Chelsea by using his main attacking midfielder in a more advanced role.”I was watching Barcelona and the striker was Leo Messi,” said Pochettino.”You can play Llorente, you can play Dele Alli, you can play Erik Lamela, you can play Kazaiah Sterling, Troy Parrott. You can play many, many players.”Chelsea played against us with Eden Hazard like a striker, when Olivier Giroud was on the bench and Alvaro Morata was out of the squad.”Tottenham make the short trip to Fulham hoping to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley by picking up a second Premier League win since the turn of the year.Pochettino indicated that he would rather see an existing member of the Spurs squad fire his team to victory than have to turn to the transfer market for a new player.”The objective is to try and create our new star through the academy – that would be the most exciting thing,” he said.”We did not find Harry Kane or Dele Alli as big stars – the two most important players in the squad were built here in Tottenham.”Why not make the effort to add a few more players and help the club step up?” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.

Messi is still bidding to win his first senior title with Argentina, and his performances for the national team have often been criticised. But Scaloni believes his nation can be successful as a team with a strong team showing and Messi doing what he does regularly for Barcelona. “If we have a good performance as a team and, in addition, Messi does what he does every Sunday, surely we will do well,” he enthused. “We know that we have pure dynamite above, high goal players, so if we are solid, we will have many possibilities, these players were born to win, to compete at these levels, to make them understand what it means to play with This shirt is the easiest, they are used to all this. ” The Argentina boss named Messi, Manchester City star Sergio Aguero and River Plate forward Matias Suarez to lead his attack against Nicaragua, choosing to roll out a strong attacking force in the preparation match. An injury to Brazilian star Neymar may have provided a minor boost to the Albicelestes as they attempt to break end their drought in the regional competition.
Neymar has conceded that Sergio Ramos is the best player he has ever come up against, while also predicting that the Spaniard’s Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr will eventually “compete for the Ballon d’Or”.The Paris Saint Germain superstar came up against Ramos on numerous occasions during his time in La Liga with Barcelona, before packing his bags and heading to France in 2017.Neymar joined PSG in a world record £200 million ($251m) deal, with the intention of stepping out of Lionel Messi’s shadow to become the best player in the world. His time in Ligue 1, however, has been blighted by injury. Twitter/@A_Kendall11Kyler Murray was taken higher than almost anyone expected in the MLB Draft. The Oakland A’s grabbed the Oklahoma quarterback/center fielder with the ninth overall pick in the Draft a few days ago. With a nearly $5 million signing bonus under his belt, that seemed like it might pull Murray away from his college football career. That is not the case, though.Murray reached a deal to play one year with the Sooners. Most Oklahoma fans have breathed a sigh of relief with the news.Murray is not a guarantee at quarterback, though. He looked great in filling in for Baker Mayfield last season, and had his moments at Texas A&M before transferring to Norman. Still, he has not started an entire season at the college level yet, and it sounds like he would be one-and-done as the starter for the Sooners. For that reason, CBS Sports‘ Dennis Dodd thinks that Austin Kendall should still get a serious look as starter, even with Kyler Murray on the team.Oklahoma wants to contend for national titles, and if Murray gives the Sooners the best chance to do so, he should get the nod. Still, there’s no guarantee that he’s that far ahead of Kendall, a redshirt sophomore who sat out last season after some action in 2016.Kendall doesn’t provide Oklahoma with the upside of Murray. He’s not as explosive running the football and doesn’t have the same creativity with the ball, but he appears to be more equipped to follow the script. In that same spring game, Kendall looked more controlled and comfortable in the offense. He finished 11 of 18 for 134 yards and added 32 rushing yards. Remember too that Kendall served as Mayfield’s backup in 2016. That season, Kendall completed 72 percent of his passes for 143 yards. But the Kendall consideration isn’t just about getting blinded by spring game stats; it’s also about the long game. If Murray starts for Oklahoma this fall and heads to the baseball diamond, Oklahoma is looking at three starting quarterbacks in three years in 2019. That year will see Kendall finally get his turn or lose the job to either 2018 signee Tanner Mordecai or 2019 commit Spencer Rattler.Murray is the more dynamic player on paper. He didn’t exactly run away from the job in the spring though, and Kendall could provide some continuity for the Sooners.I’d still probably pencil in Murray as the starter when Oklahoma takes on FAU in Week 1. It is still far too early to count out Kendall though, and that would make all of the drama surrounding the MLB Draft over the last few weeks seem pretty silly in retrospect.[CBS Sports]

(Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images)Tom Brady is now regarded as the best quarterback of all-time, but it wasn’t that long ago that he was just an undergrad at Michigan trying to figure out his football future. Saturday, Brady dialed it back on Instagram to show some support for his alma mater ahead of their big game.Brady, in his note, reminded fans that his first start at Michigan came against Notre Dame on the road. He says that while it didn’t go so well, he never looked back.Brady also said he wants to “rub it in” on his Notre Dame fans by seeing his team win tonight. Here’s what Brady had to say:“Good luck tonight and Go Blue. My first start was at ND stadium in 1998 and although it didn’t go that well, I never looked back! Good luck tonight wolverines I have a lot of ND friends and it’s been a while since I got to rub it in!! #quarterbackweezyyoungtombrady#GoBlue #BeatND”Brady, as we all know, was not a heralded quarterback out of college. But the New England Patriots drafted him in the sixth round and gave him a shot. Five Super Bowl titles later, he’s regarded as the best to ever play the game.Notre Dame and Michigan will square off at 7:30 PM ET.
